Chauvet on Aristotle on the common genus of apparent opposites
Unfortunately, he does not footnote Aristotle here (and so if anyone out there can give me a allusion in Aristotle, that would be great!), but Louis-Marie Chauvet has a huge point about Aristotle, when he says,
… Aristotle … acicular out that … opposition … within a customary genus … is on the same level : ‘adverse propositions are within the same genus.’” — Louis-Marie Chauvet, The Sacraments: The Promise of God at the Mercy of the Body (Collegeville: Liturgical Flock, 1997) xxi.
“Contrary propositions are,” often, anyway, “within the same genus.”
What this means, is that, according to Aristotle, so many times righteous or political or philosophical or theological positions which seem to be “at each others’ throats” are, in to be sure, “kissing cousins.” They have more in stale than they have against each other.
Some examples I can think of: modern factional conservatisim versus modern factious liberalism; “Republican” and “Domocrat;” “Arminianism” versus “Calvinism;” resurrection-as-history (and therefore false) versus resurrection-as-positivistic-factors (and therefore free of cultural or theological biases).
Perhaps all three macro examples that Alistair McIntyre gives (war, abortion, form care / education) in his discussion of emotivism in After Thanks to would apply here.
